U.S. Senators Warn Nvidia CEO Ahead of China Visit Over Export Control Concerns
Senators Elizabeth Warren and Jim Banks issued a joint letter to Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, urging caution during his planned visit to China. The lawmakers expressed concerns that discussions with Chinese firms could undermine U.S. export controls on advanced AI technology.
The letter specifically warned against engaging with entities on U.S. restricted lists or those suspected of aiding China's military or intelligence capabilities. "There is a new bipartisan consensus that the hardware powering advanced AI, which includes Nvidia graphics processing units (GPUs), is of immense strategic importance," the senators wrote.
Nvidia responded by emphasizing the strategic advantage of U.S. technological dominance. A company spokesperson stated that when American tech becomes the global standard, "America wins," highlighting China's pool of software engineers as reason to ensure AI applications run best on U.S. technology stacks.
